* “Undergraduate in any American or Canadian college or university, or anyone not enrolled as a graduate student who has received the degree of A.B. or its equivalent, within the past year.”
* Write an essay on a subject related to the life or works of Dante (see below).

The prize is $250 for the best essay. Essays should be no longer than 5,000 words in length, including bibliographies and any other material. Each writer should provide a cover page (as the first page of the file) giving the writer’s name, local, permanent and e-mail addresses, the title of the essay, the essay category, and the writer’s institutional affiliation. The writer’s name should not appear on the essay title page (to follow the cover page) or on any other page of the essay since the essays are submitted anonymously to the readers. Quotations from Dante’s works should be cited in the original language, and the format of an essay should conform to either the Chicago or MLA Style Sheet guidelines. Submissions will be judged by a special Committee of the Society. The results will be announced in early autumn and published in the fall issue of the DSA Newsletter and in Dante Studies. While the essays remain the intellectual property of the writers, the submitted text will be not returned to authors.

Center for Hellenic Studies Fellowship

Deadline: October 15th for applicants, October 22nd for recommenders

Applicants must fill out the online application form completely before clicking on the “Submit” button at the end of the form. The system will not save incomplete applications. For questions that require more lengthy responses (for example, “How would a fellowship at the CHS fit into your short- and long-term plans?”), applicants may want to draft them in a separate authoring environment and then have them ready to transfer into the web-based application form.

As part of the application process, applicants will upload three documents in PDF format:

1. A detailed, but brief research proposal (no more than 1,000 words)

2. A curriculum vitae listing your recent publications and presentations

3. A sample of published work (no more than 50 printed pages in length)

Applicants will also provide the names and contact information for three references. The CHS will solicit letters from references only after an applicant has submitted an application. Those who write references must prepare and submit their letters in PDF format by the deadline. Applicants are responsible for ensuring that those who write their references submit their letters on time.

Please note that applicants may not write reference letters for other applicants. Additionally, members of the selection committee (senior fellows and the director) may not write reference letters.

Center for Philosophy of Religion at the University of Notre Dame Fellowships

The Center for Philosophy of Religion at the University of Notre Dame announces five fellowships: the Alvin Plantinga Fellowship ($60,000), awarded to a distinguished senior scholar; two Research Fellowships ($40,000 – $50,000, depending on rank); the Frederick J. Crosson Fellowship ($45,000) reserved for foreign scholars and those outside the field of philosophy; and one Visiting Graduate Fellowship ($16,000) awarded to a graduate student in philosophy who is working on a dissertation in the philosophy of religion and who would profit from spending a year at the Center. The Plantinga Fellow and the Research Fellows may have the option of teaching one course in philosophy per semester as well. Those who do teach receive up to an additional $7,500 annually.

The Bill Raskob Foundation, Inc. is a small family foundation, and depends upon the
repayment of loans in order to continue to help students obtain an education. It is important that you recognize there is a moral as well as legal obligation to repay any loan that you may receive.

In order to qualify, you must be an American citizen, enrolled at an accredited institution for the upcoming school year. At present, the Foundation is not accepting applications from foreign students, US students graduating from a foreign school, for first year study (undergraduate) or correspondence courses. You will also wish to know that it is not the policy of this Foundation to fund students through more than one degree…or accept applications for theses, dissertations, internships, residencies or affiliations.

American Research Institute in Turkey: Fellowships in the Humanities and Social Sciences in Turkey

The Fellowships:   Grants for tenures up to one year will be considered, however, some preference is given to projects of shorter duration.  ARIT operates hostel, research, and study facilities for researchers in Turkey at its branch centers in Istanbul and Ankara.

Eligibility and Requirements: Scholars and advanced graduate students engaged in research on ancient, medieval, or modern times in Turkey, in any field of the humanities and social sciences, are eligible.  Student applicants must have fulfilled all requirements for the doctorate except the dissertation, and before beginning any ARIT-sponsored research.  Non-U.S. applicants are expected to maintain an affiliation with an educational institution in the United States or Canada.

American Association of Japanese University Women (AAJUW) Scholarship

The American Association of Japanese University Women (AAJUW) is currently accepting applications for scholarships.  AAJUW was founded in 1970 to promote the education of women, as well as to contribute to U.S. – Japan relations, cultural exchanges, and development of leadership.  Every year, since the founding of the organization, scholarships have been awarded to outstanding female students.  For this year each awardee will receive a $1,500 scholarship. Eligibility:

  • Must be a female student enrolled in an accredited California college or university Must have junior, senior or graduate standing
  • Must attend, at own expense, the award ceremony in Los Angeles.
  • Shall be a contributor to U.S. – Japan relations, cultural exchanges, and the development of leadership in the area of her designated field

The purpose of the Foundation’s Fellowship Program is to assist well-qualified individuals in carrying out an independent scholarly, literary or art project, in a field of Jewish specialization, which makes a significant contribution to the understanding, preservation, enhancement or transmission of Jewish culture. Scholarships are open to graduate students of any nationality who are specializing in a Jewish field and are officially enrolled or registered in a doctoral program at a recognized university. The amount of the grant varies in accordance with the cost of living in the country in which the fellowship recipient resides. Grants range up to $10,000 per year.

JACL Scholarships Program – National Scholarships and Awards

Deadline:  April 1

The JACL began its National Scholarship and Awards Program in 1946. The program currently offers over 30 awards,with an annual total of about $60,000 in scholarships to qualified students nationwide.The National Scholarship and Awards Program offer scholarships to students at the entering freshman, undergraduate,graduate, law, financial need and creative & performing arts. All scholarships are one-time awards.

Eligibility:

  • Every applicant must be an active National JACL member at either an Individual or  Student/Youth Level.  Parent membership will not meet this requirement.  Applications are available on our website.
  • Applicants must be planning to attend a college, university, trade school, business school, or any other institution of higher learning within the United States at the undergraduate or graduate school

Magoichi & Shizuko Kato Memorial Scholarship – Originally from Peru, the Kato family settled in Los Angeles, California where they owned a successful grocery business.  This award was established by Mrs. Kato in memory of her husband.  Preference for this award will be given to a student planning a career in medicine or ministry.

Henry & Chiyo Kuwahara Memorial Scholarship – This award was established by the estate of Henry and Chiyo Kuwahara.  Mr. Kuwahara, a resident of Los Angeles, was a well-known investment and securities broker in Little Tokyo.

Railroad and Mine Workers Memorial Scholarship – Established by the families of Japanese American railroad and mine workers to pay tribute to the lives of these Issei and Nisei pioneers.  This scholarship memorializes the story of these workers, who were fired from their jobs after the outbreak of World War II and their children’s successful fight for recognition and justice decades later.

Reverend H. John Yamashita Memorial Scholarship  – Reverend Yamashita, prior to WWII was pastor of the Oakland West 10th Methodist Church.  A native of Oakland, California, Reverend Yamashita founded a hostel for Japanese Americans returning to the West Coast after internment.  He went to pastor at the Centenary Methodist Church in Los Angeles, until his retirement in 1966.

Minoru Yasui Memorial Scholarship  – A civil rights advocate and attorney, Minoru Yasui was one of the three Nisei who challenged the imprisonment of Japanese Americans during WWII.  After the war, Mr. Yasui practiced law and served as legal counsel dozens of community activities.  In 1979, Mr. Yasui was appointed chair of the JACL Committee on Redress, in which he traveled extensively around the country advocating for redress and reparations.  Preference for this scholarship will be given to students with a strong interest in Human Rights and Civil Rights.  Fields of study may include sociology, law or education.

Abe and Esther Hagiwara Student Aid Award  – Founded to provide financial assistance to a student who otherwise would have to delay or terminate his/ her education due to a lack of financing.  Only applicants that exhibit severe financial need will be considered for this award.

Foundation Center

Foundation Center offers information about grant writing and funding opportunities.  There are five locations across the country, including one in San Francisco.  They have a library and a database on site that people can utilize free of charge.  Since it is in the Bay Area it may be worth an afternoon excursion!
