The Jonathan M. Daniels Memorial Fellowship

The Jonathan M. Daniels Memorial Fellowship

Deadline: June 1

The Jonathan M. Daniels Memorial Fellowship was established in 1966 in memory of Jonathan Myrick Daniels, a student at Episcopal Theological School (predecessor institution of Episcopal Divinity School), who was shot and killed in 1965 while working for civil rights in Alabama. The intent of these fellowships is to make possible the continuing expression on the part of seminarians of the spirit of Jonathan Daniels, who acted upon his conviction that God wanted him to make a Christian witness in the struggle for civil rights and who, in doing so, lost his life.

A fellowship is awarded annually to provide financial assistance to one or more seminarians seeking to strengthen their theological education through participation in a social movement concerned with important human needs. Funded projects allow fellows to be directly engaged in an area of social justice such as (but not limited to) civil rights, community organization, fair housing, immigrant rights, prisoner rights, racial equality, or environmental justice.

Projects are not intended to support academic research, supervised field education, existing nonprofit organizations, or other activities that are primarily based in the school’s degree curriculum.

Eligibility: Any student currently enrolled in a degree program, and in good academic standing, at an accredited seminary of the American Association of Theological Schools (ATS).

Awards: Grants of up to $5,000 per project, to one or more qualified students. Funded projects may take place in the United States or in another country. A documented financial accountings and a written evaluation report must be submitted upon project completion.

FASPE: Fellowships at Auschwitz for the Study of Professional Ethics

FASPE: Fellowships at Auschwitz for the Study of Professional Ethics:

Summer Ethics Fellowships for Seminary and Divinity School Students

Deadline: December 20

The Fellowships at Auschwitz for the Study of Professional Ethics (FASPE) seeks applications for its fellowships. FASPE Seminary, a component of a larger program that works with students in various fields, uses the conduct of the clergy in Nazi Germany and the Holocaust as a launching point for an intensive course of study on the ethical challenges of religious leadership. FASPE is predicated upon the power of place, and in particular the first-hand experience of visiting Auschwitz and traveling through Germany and Poland where Fellows study the past and consider how to apply the lessons of history as they confront the ethical challenges of today.

Fellowships include travel from New York to Berlin, Krakow and Oświęcim (Auschwitz) to examine topics like: “God’s shadow” in the wake of the Holocaust; religious faith and the temptations of prejudice; remembrance & forgiveness; and encouraging moral sensitivity. Fellowships will cover all program costs, including international and European travel, lodging, and food.

To apply or to learn more about FASPE, click here. All students enrolled in graduate school at the time of their applications are eligible. Award notifications will be emailed by Feb. 1. Students of all religious, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds are encouraged to apply. Previous participants have come from schools such as Boston College, Catholic Theological Union, Fuller Theological Seminary, the Hartford Seminary, Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, and Yeshiva University.
