Three to five scholarships are available annually to students working toward their Master of Divinity degree who plan to enter the ministry of a mainline Protestant church. Special consideration is given to those who are willing to serve in the Rio Grande Conference and the Southwest Texas Conference of the Methodist Church. Scholarships are effective for three years or until the student graduates.

Eligibility for Aid

To be eligible to apply for UUA financial aid grants, all applicants must be in Candidate status. There are also two scholarships available to Incoming First Year students. Full-time and part-time students are eligible to apply. Those planning to be in an internship are eligible to apply, even if they will not be enrolled in theological school during the internship.

The Unitarian Universalist Association has a variety of scholarship sources. Some are general scholarship and others are named scholarships, with specific criteria. All financial aid grants are determined by a committee of UUA staff members and others that include two Unitarian Universalist ministers and a Unitarian Universalist layperson with a background in finance. Grants are determined on the basis of academic merit and financial need, consistent with the requirements of the scholarship funds, and range from $1000 to $15,000. Please review the following for information about all available scholarships.

Application Procedure

  1. All forms are to be received no later than 5 p.m. on April 15, 2013, and must be sent to the Ministerial Credentialing Office, UUA, 25 Beacon Street, Boston, MA 02108.
  2. All application requests must be complete. Incomplete applications will not be considered.
  3. Have your financial aid officer fill out the Financial Aid Application 2013-2014 form.
  4. Have a Unitarian Universalist minister in full fellowship (please, not a faculty member from your theological school) fill out a recommendation form.
  5. Have your faculty advisor or another faculty member fill out a recommendation form.
  6. In addition, students (except Canadians. and those who are in internship but not students) are required to submit a Student Aid Report containing a calculation of the Expected Family Contribution (EFC) ordinarily obtainable from one’s theological school upon completion of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) forms available on the FAFSA website or from the U.S. Department of Education.
  7. You will receive notification of financial aid award decisions by June 14, 2013.

Named Scholarships

Applicants for financial aid through the UUA are automatically considered for these named scholarship; no additional application materials are required, unless otherwise noted.

  • The Martha and Robert Atherton Ministerial Scholarship
    Established in 1997, this scholarship is designed to provide financial assistance to promising ministerial students in their second or third year of seminary who have already proven their capabilities. This scholarship is awarded to individuals who respect hard work as a foundation of a full life and who appreciate the freedom, political system and philosophical underpinnings of our country. Martha and Robert Atherton are dedicated Unitarian Universalists who have made this scholarship possible through their generous contributions.
  • The David Eaton Scholarship
    Maureen Mulliner, a long time member of All Soul’s Church in Washington, DC, made an estate gift to establish this award in order to affirm Rev. David Hilliard Eaton’s vision of a community dedicated to strengthening hope, justice, and balance, and creating an anti-racist, multicultural religious organization and country. This scholarship is awarded to women from an historically marginalized group who share the same vision as David Eaton.
  • Lucille K and Jerome P. Gallon Scholarship Fund
    The Lucille K. and Jerome P. Gallon Scholarship fund was created to support promising candidates for Unitarian Universalist ministry. This scholarship is to individuals who have demonstrated strong preaching skills during their path to ministry.
  • The Ingeborg Haseltine Scholarship Funds
    Ingeborg Haseltine made a gift from her estate to establish a permanent scholarship fund to support the education of women pursuing a career in the ministry of the Unitarian Universalist Association.
  • Interfaith Spirituality Scholarship
    This scholarship was established by a generous donor who wishes to remain anonymous. The purpose of this scholarship is to support deserving individuals who have demonstrated an interest in and are prepared to integrate interfaith understanding into their ministry, and have a commitment to guiding others on their own spiritual path.
  • The Susan M. Jackson Ministerial Scholars Fund
    Susan M. Jackson’s children established this fund on Ms. Jackson’s 85th birthday to honor her commitment and dedication to Unitarian Universalism. This scholarship is awarded to recipients who share with the wider world their enthusiasm about UU ideas and conclusions, drawn from their faith, which influence their lives.
  • The David Pohl Scholarship
    This scholarship was established by the Unitarian Universalist Association of Congregations upon Rev. Pohl’s retirement as UUA Director of Ministry in 1993. It supports the intellectual, spiritual, and professional development of individuals preparing for UU ministry.
  • Roy H. Pollack Scholarship
    The Roy H. Pollack Scholarship was created in 1998 to support second or third year students who have strong academic records and are promising candidates for UU ministry.
  • The Von Ogden Vogt Scholarship
    This scholarship was established in 2001 by Ogden and Carolyn Vogt to honor Carolyn’s father, the Rev. Dr. Von Ogden Vogt and his dedication and commitment to Unitarian Universalism. Scholarships are given to support the intellectual, spiritual, and professional development of future Unitarian Universalist ministers who are attending Meadville Lombard Theological School. This scholarship has an additional application requirement.
  • The Donald K. Evans Memorial Theological Scholarship Fund
    This scholarship was established by the Ohio-Meadville District and is awarded to members or former members of congregations within the Ohio-Meadville District who are preparing for the Unitarian Universalist ministry.
  • The President William G. Sinkford Scholarship
    The Unitarian Universalist Association established the President William G. Sinkford Fund in 2008, during the last year of Rev. Sinkford’s UUA Presidency. Having begun his service in June 2001, Rev. Sinkford left the Association with many profound and lasting gifts including the innovative Diversity of Ministry Initiative and support for lay theological education and ministerial development programs. To honor his legacy in the years to come, the Sinkford Fund will further Rev. Sinkford’s visions by providing scholarships for promising and passionate students preparing for Unitarian Universalist ministry.

          • Scholarships are designated for ministerial students who identify as people of color, Latino/a, Hispanic, and multi-racial.
          • Students in candidate status for Unitarian Universalist ministry are eligible to apply.
          • Funds will be distributed through the UUA Scholarship Committee.

The Dissertation Fellowship Program seeks to encourage a new generation of scholars from a wide range of disciplines and professional fields to undertake research relevant to the improvement of education. These $25,000 fellowships support individuals whose dissertations show potential for bringing fresh and constructive perspectives to the history, theory, or practice of formal or informal education anywhere in the world.

Eligibility

Applicants need not be citizens of the United States; however, they must be candidates for the doctoral degree at a graduate school within the United States. These fellowships are not intended to finance data collection or the completion of doctoral coursework, but rather to support the final analysis of the research topic and the writing of the dissertation. For this reason, all applicants must document that they will have completed all pre-dissertation requirements by June 1, 2016 and must provide a clear and specific plan for completing the dissertation within a one or two-year time frame.

Each year The Society for the Scientific Study of Sexuality (SSSS) awards two grants of $1,000 each to students who are doing sexuality research. The purpose of the research can be a master’s thesis or doctoral dissertation, but this is not a requirement. Funds to support these grants are provided by The Foundation for the Scientific Study of Sexuality (FSSS), a nonprofit organization devoted exclusively to supporting scientific research related to sexuality. Applicant must be enrolled in a degree-granting program.

The Harkness Scholarship Award is available to women over 35 years of age who have received a B.A. or equivalent degree, are enrolled in an accredited school of theology, and are currently certified as candidates for ordained ministry as an Elder in the United Methodist Church. Awards are not available for work toward an undergraduate, D.Min., or Ph.D. degree. Grants of $5,000 each will be awarded each year.

Lilly Fellows Program in the Humanities and the Arts / Post-doctoral Fellowship Program

Lilly Fellows are appointed for two years at a rank equivalent to that of instructor.  The salary is $47,300 for the coming academic year, plus standard benefits, a moving allowance and an annual professional and travel allowance. Fellows are expected to be in local residence throughout the terms of their appointments.

These teaching Fellowships are open to new scholar-teachers interested in the relationship between Christianity and the academic vocation and seriously considering a career at a church-related college or university.  Research or dissertation topics are not restricted to religion.

Fellows will be recruited from the following disciplines: art and art history; creative writing; history; interdisciplinary studies; languages and literatures; music and music history; philosophy; religion; rhetoric; theater history and theater arts.

Candidates will be asked to demonstrate their interest in the goals of the Lilly Fellows Program and a sense of commitment to explore teaching and scholarship as a Christian vocation.

Application materials must include:

  • a curriculum vita, with educational degrees, teaching experience, and publications
  • a graduate transcript; or a dossier that includes a graduate transcript and may include general letters of recommendation
  • two letters of recommendation that should comment on the strength and character of the candidate’s commitment to an academic vocation and suitability for the Lilly Fellows Program
  • an essay or personal statement of not more than 1,000 words that discusses the sources of the candidate’s interest in this fellowship program

Finalists will be invited to Valparaiso University for extended interviews. Final selection of the Lilly Fellows is made by a Valparaiso University faculty committee that includes the Program Director. Three postdoctoral fellowships will be awarded.

All application materials should be directed to “The Selection Committee”. Documents may be sent separately or in one complete package. Facsimiles are acceptable as long as the original is mailed as well.

Eligibility :

Application is extended to any student or graduate student enrolled full-time in an accredited California post-secondary educational institution whose educational career goals clearly coincide with Emily’s interest in communicating and interpreting nature’s wonder.  Students pursuing degrees in environmental protection, forestry, wildlife and fisheries biology, parks and recreation, park management, environmental law and public policy, environmental art, and California history are encouraged to apply.  Dedication ideals of the scholarship will be considered at least as important as financial need in making the award.

A first book or monograph’s eligibility is determined by the publication date. Books are eligible to be submitted in the third year after the publication date that appears in the book. For example, books bearing a publication date of 2000 were submitted in 2003 for the prize given in 2004. The author must be a resident of North America. Three copies of the book should be sent to the Academy office, addressed to the Brown Prize Committee.The following documents should be sent by email to the Executive Director at LFD@TheMedievalAcademy.org: a PDF comprised of three substantive reviews that have appeared in print or online; a statement by the author that it is his or her first book in the medieval field.

John Leyerle-CARA Prize for Dissertation Research – Medieval Academy

In recognition of John Leyerle’s outstanding contributions and continuous service to the Committee on Centers and Regional Associations (CARA), to the Medieval Academy, and to the general conduct of medieval studies in North America, CARA has established an annual prize in the amount of $1,000 to support the doctoral research of a Medieval Academy member who needs to consult materials available in Toronto collections. These include the University of Toronto’s Robarts Library, the collections of the Dictionary of Old English and the Records of Early English Drama projects, and the library of the Pontifical Institute of Mediaeval Studies. The annual deadline for applications is 31 January for travel in the period between 1 May and 30 April of the following year.

Graduate students of the University of Toronto currently in residence are not eligible. The selection committee will be composed of the Chair of CARA and medievalists on the University of Toronto faculty. Applications must include three items: 1) a proposal of not more than three pages outlining the research project, including a statement that specifically addresses the pertinence of material in Toronto collections to the dissertation research; 2) a brief curriculum vitae; and 3) a letter of support from the dissertation director or major professor.
