Individual Research Grants—American Academy of Religion

To fulfill its commitment to advance research in religion, the AAR each year grants awards ranging from $500 to $5000 to support projects proposed by AAR members and selected by the AAR Research Grants Review Committee. These projects can be either collaborative or individual.

These grants provide support for important aspects of research such as travel to archives and libraries, research assistance, field work, and released time. Grant awards range from $500 to $5000.

Funds are not provided for dissertation research, publication expenses, nor travel to attend the AAR Annual Meeting.

Eligibility:

  • Applicants must be current AAR members who have been in good standing for the previous three years.
  • Applicants will not be considered who have received an AAR Research Award in the previous five years.
  • Applicants must have completed their doctorate.

The Southern Jewish Historical Society

The Southern Jewish Historical Society Grant

Deadline:  August 15

  1. The Project Completion Grantis intended to facilitate the completion of projects relevant to Jewish history in the Southern United States. Such projects might include the publication of books or exhibit catalogs or the preparation of exhibit modules. Grants may not be used to fund research or travel.  A total of $6000 will be divided among funded applications.
  2. The Kawaler Research/Travel Grant assists individuals with travel and other expenses related to conducting research in Southern Jewish history.  A total of $2000 will be divided among funded applications. Applicants must present a plan of research, indicating the libraries and/or archives where they intend to work, and their goal, as well as a budget of expenses and other sources of funding and contact information. 
  3. The Lowenstein Archival Grant encourages the preservation of archival materials related to Southern Jewish history.  A total of $1000 will be divided among funded applications.  Applicants must include a description of the project and a budget and contact information.

Sidney E. Mead Prize (Essay)—American Society of Church History (ASCH)

Offered annually, is an award in the amount of $300 for the author of the best unpublished essay in any field of church history written by a doctoral candidate or recent graduate whose manuscript stems directly from doctoral research. The manuscript will be published in Church History, contingent upon incorporating revisions stipulated by the review committee. Entries must be submitted by July 1.

Calihan Academic Fellowship Program—Acton Institute

The Calihan Academic Fellowships provide scholarships and research grants to future scholars and religious leaders whose academic work shows outstanding potential. Applicants studying theology, philosophy, economics, or related fields must demonstrate the potential to advance understanding in the relationship between theology and the principles of the free and virtuous society. Such principles include recognition of human dignity, the importance of the rule of law, limited government, religious liberty, and freedom in economic life.

Grant Amount : $3,000.

Eligibility:

  • Awards are open to seminarians or graduate students in theology, philosophy, religion, economics, or in related fields.
  • Strong academic performance is essential.
  • Candidates must have a demonstrated interest in the themes of the Acton Institute.
  • Candidates must display the potential to advance the themes of the Acton Institute.
  • Awards are open to all qualified persons irrespective of race, sex, national or ethnic origin, citizenship, religious affiliation, or disability.

Research Grants from the American Historical Association

The Albert J. Beveridge Grant for Research in the Western Hemisphere are available to support research in the history of the Western hemisphere; individual grants do not exceed $1,000. Application deadline is February 15, annually.

The Michael Kraus Research Grant in colonial American history, with particular reference to the intercultural aspects of American and European relations, offers cash awards of up to $800. Application deadline is February 15, annually.

The Littleton-Griswold Grant offers grants of up to $1,000 for research in U.S. legal history and the field of law and society. Application deadline is February 15, annually.

The Bernadotte Schmitt Grants support research in the history of Europe, Asia, and Africa. Individual grants will not exceed $1,000. The deadline for application is February 15.

NB: Only AHA members are eligible to apply for these grants. All grants are offered annually and are intended to further research in progress. Preference is given to advanced doctoral students, non-tenured faculty, and unaffiliated scholars. They may be used for travel to a library or archive; microfilming, photography, or photocopying; borrowing or access fees; and similar research expenses.

Scholarship and Financial Aid Information: Unfortunately, the American Historical Association has NO scholarships or financial aid to assist with college or graduate school expenses. Eligibility for the fellowships and small grants programs described above is limited to pre- or post-doctoral research for AHA members

Medieval Academy Dissertation Grants—Medieval Academy

Deadline:  February 15

Medieval Academy dissertation grants support advanced graduate students who are writing Ph.D. dissertations on medieval topics. The $2,000 grants help defray research expenses such as the cost of travel to research collections and the cost of photographs, photocopies, microfilms, and other research materials. The cost of books or equipment (e.g., computers) is not included.

All graduate students whose primary research focuses on an aspect of medieval studies are eligible but if your topic deals with late-medieval Britain (ca. 1350 – 1500), you should apply for a Schallek Award. Applicants must have received approval from their dissertation committee for their projects by the application date.

*Applicants must be members of the Medieval Academy as of 15 January of the year in which they apply.

Fellowship of United Methodists in Music and Worship Arts

The Fellowship of United Methodists in Music and Worship Arts offers assistance to students who are training for a ministry in the United Methodist Church in the areas of music, worship, drama, dance, visuals and other liturgical arts. Applicants must have been members of the United Methodist Church for at least one year prior to application, giving strong evidence of Christian character and participation in Christian activities of the church and/or campus. Applicants must be full-time music degree candidates in an accredited university, college, or school of theology, or pursuing an education in worship or the arts related to worship. Applicants must demonstrate exceptional musical/artistic talent, effective leadership ability, and outstanding promise of future usefulness to the Church in the areas of music and/or worship.

Named after distinguished American theologian Michael Novak, this $10,000 award rewards new outstanding scholarly research into the relationship between religion, economic freedom, and the free and virtuous society. This award recognizes those scholars early in their academic career who demonstrate outstanding intellectual merit in advancing the understanding of theology’s connection to human dignity, the importance of the rule of law, limited government, religious liberty, and freedom in economic life.

  • Nominations: Professors, university faculty members, and other scholars may nominate qualified individuals for the Novak Award by completing the online nomination form.

Eligbility:

  • Scholars who have received a doctorate from an accredited domestic or international program in the previous five calendar years. Current doctoral candidates in the process of completing their dissertations are also eligible.
  • Nominees also must be studying theology, religion, economics, philosophy, business, or a related field.
  • Strong academic performance is essential.
  • Nominees must have a demonstrated interest in the relationship between religion, economic liberty, and the free and virtuous society. Important principles in this relationship include the recognition of human dignity, the importance of the rule of law, limited government, religious liberty, and freedom in economic life.
  • Nominees must display the potential to contribute to the advancement of a free and virtuous society.
  • will be provided in addition to the $10,000 award. Any published work drawn out of the fellowship research must also be granted by-line acknowledgment to the Novak Award and the Acton Institute.
  • The recipient of the Novak Award will present his or her research in a public forum known as the Calihan Lecture. Travel expenses for the recipient to and from the Calihan Lecture

All qualified individuals will be considered for the Novak Award without regard to race, sex, national or ethnic origin, citizenship, religious affiliation, or disability. Award decisions are final and are not subject to appeal.

Hebrew Free Loan Association’s Interest-Free Loans

Hebrew Free Loan Association

Hebrew Free Loan Association (HBLA) came into being in 1897 to serve Jewish immigrants and today, HFLA works to help the recent wave of immigrants from the Soviet Union and the Middle East.  HFLA also helps native-born Jewish Americans who have faced temporary financial problems or saw business opportunities, and those whose needs ranged from buying furniture to paying for college tuition.  Applicants must be Jewish residents of Northern California, and they can be of any age and in any field of study.

Student Loans ($6,000 per academic year for undergraduate students, and $10,000 per academic year for graduate students). Student loans assist those enrolled full-time in a college, graduate school, professional program, or vocational school.
