Boren Fellowships, an initiative of the National Security Education Program, provide unique funding opportunities for U.S. graduate students to study less commonly taught languages in world regions critical to U.S. interests, and underrepresented in study abroad, including Africa, Asia, Central and Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America, and the Middle East. The countries of Western Europe, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand are excluded.

Boren Fellows represent a vital pool of highly motivated individuals who wish to work in the federal national security arena. In exchange for funding, Boren Fellows commit to working in the federal government for at least one year after graduation.

Boren Fellowships provide up to $24,000 for overseas study. Boren Fellowship awards are made for a minimum of 12 weeks and maximum of 24 months.The program focuses on geographic areas, languages, and fields of study deemed critical to U.S. national security. Boren Fellowships are awarded with preference for countries, languages, and fields of study critical to U.S. national security. For more information about the application process, click here. The Foundation requests that previous grantees allow a one-year hiatus prior to reapplication.  This allows our grants to be available to an even wider number of applicants.  Applicants may only submit one proposal per year.

Grants from the Puffin Foundation, Ltd. can only be awarded to permanent residents and citizens of the United States. U.S. citizens whose projects encompass work in other countries are still eligible to apply.

The Puffin Foundation Ltd. continues to make grants that encourage emerging artists whose works might have difficulty being aired due to their genre and/or social philosophy. The Foundation does not have the means to fund large film/documentary proposals, grants for travel, continuing education, or the writing or publishing of books.  Average grants are approximately $1,250.  The maximum grant size is $2,500.

The Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adults National College Scholarship Program

The Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adults is committed to helping young adults continue their education after being affected by cancer through their own diagnosis or the diagnosis of a loved one. Many scholarships offered by UCF share similar applicant criteria. Applicants need only submit one application, which will be considered for any and all scholarships for which the student applies and is eligible.

Applicants must have been between the ages of 15 and 39 during their own diagnosis/treatment or during the diagnosis/treatment of their parent or sibling.

Scholarship winners will be awarded a total of $2500 over two academic semesters. Scholarship funds will be paid directly to the scholarship recipient’s school. Each scholarship winner is obligated to organize and run a bone marrow registry drive with the support of Delete Blood Cancer and There Goes My Hero.

Kathern F. Gruber Scholarship

Spouses and dependent children of blinded veterans are eligible for the annual Kathern F. Gruber Scholarship Awards to assist them with their higher education tuition. The scholarships are awarded on the basis of merit through an application process that is evaluated by a committee. Gruber scholarships are for one year only but recipients can reapply and receive the award up to four times. The blinded veteran family member is not required to be a BVA member for the spouse or child to receive a scholarship.

The Association is pleased to offer scholarships to young adults with hydrocephalus :

 The Gerard Swartz Fudge Scholarship was created in 1993. Gerard, who died on November 25, 1992, at the age of 22, is the son of two of the founders of the Hydrocephalus Association, Russell and Emily Fudge.

 The Morris L. Ziskind Memorial Scholarship was established in 2002, in memory of Morris L. Ziskind, by his wife, Rebecca, and the Ziskind family. Morris was diagnosed with normal pressure hydrocephalus when he was in his 80s.

 The Anthony Abbene Scholarship Fund was established in 2003. The scholarship was created by the Fonte and Abbene families in honor of Anthony, who has hydrocephalus.

Justin Scot Alston Memorial Scholarship:
Gloria M. Alston established this scholarship in loving memory of her son, Justin Scot Alston, who died in 2004. Justin received a Hydrocephalus Association scholarship in 2002 and will be remembered for his tremendous upbeat attitude and for all that he accomplished during his short life.

Mario J. Tocco Hydrocephalus Foundation Scholarship:
Greg and Georgana Tocco and their families established this scholarship in 2007 in loving memory of Greg’s grandfather, Mario, and in honor of the Hydrocephalus Foundation, Inc of  Saugus, MA.

Eligibility:

  • Applicants must be between 17 and 30 years old and have hydrocephalus.  
  • Scholarship funds must be used for an educational purpose: a four-year or junior college, a high school post-graduate year to prepare for college, technical or trade school, an accredited employment-training program or a post-graduate program.
  • The scholarship funds may be used for tuition, books, housing or an expense directly related to the education experience.

Gallaudet University Alumni Association Graduate Fellowship Fund For Deaf and Hard of Hearing Students

The Graduate Fellowship Fund (GFF) is one of three separate funds made possible by the half-million dollar Centennial Fund that was presented by the Gallaudet University Alumni Association (GUAA). By agreement between the GUAA and the Board of Trustees of Gallaudet University, the income from the investment of the GFF is used to provide financial assistance to deaf graduates of Gallaudet University and other accredited colleges and universities in pursuit of graduate study at colleges and universities for people who hear normally. 

Eligibility:
No restrictions are placed upon eligibility because of race, color, sex, creed, or nationality. In cases of equal qualification, preference is given to applicants who are citizens of the United States. To qualify for a fellowship, the following criteria must be met:

  • Hearing Status—The fellowships are intended for deaf or hard of hearing students. Audiological assessment comparable to that required for admission to the Gallaudet University undergraduate program may be the qualifying factor in this respect. The assessment should not be more than three years old.
  • Education—The minimum educational criterion will be admission to an accredited graduate program.
  • Program of Study—The applicant must have been accepted in an accredited graduate program in a college or university. A letter to that effect from the college or university must be supplied with the application.
  • Preference shall be given, to the extent practicable, to applicants who possess a master’s degree or the equivalent and are seeking a doctorate.

Fred Schiegert Scholarship Program for Students with Low Vision

Awarding three (3) students an individual prize of $3,000., this competitive scholarship is available to full-time college students with low vision, chosen from among those who meet the visual acuity and academic guidelines.

Guidelines, On-line Application, and CCLVI Scholarship Applicant Eye Report Form are available on this web site from January 1st, to 11:59 pm EST March 15th each year. The application must be completed online.

Semi-finalists will be selected to participate in a telephone interview with committee members. Winners will be notified in late spring. Winners are expected to attend our annual meeting, which is held in conjunction with the American Council of the Blind National Convention and generally takes place the first week in July.

Alexander Graham Bell Association for the Deaf Scholarship

Requests must be made in writing.  Applicants must have a 60 dB or greater hearing loss in the better ear in the speech frequencies of 500, 1,000, and 2,000 Hz.  Applicants must be oral deaf students who were born with a profound hearing impairment, or incurred loss before language was acquired.  Applicants must use speech and residual hearing and/or speech reading as their mode of communication.  Applicants must be accepted by or already enrolled in a regular full-time college or university program for students with normal hearing.

The American Council of the Blind is accepting applications for scholarships for blind students admitted to post-secondary academic and vocational programs. Awards generally fall in the range of $1,000-$4,000 per year. Applicants must be legally blind in both eyes.
