The Schallek Fellowship provides a one-year grant of $30,000 to support Ph.D. dissertation research in any relevant discipline dealing with late-medieval Britain (ca. 1350-1500).

Eligibility:

Applicants must be a membersof the Medieval Academy. Graduate students who are members of the Medieval Academy and who seek support to research and write Ph.D. dissertations on topics related to medieval Britain before 1350 or on any other medieval topic should apply to the Medieval Academy Dissertation Grant program.

CAARI offers an active fellowship program. Fellowship opportunities include both CAARI-sponsored fellowships and fellowships sponsored by others, such as Fulbright research fellowships, CAORC multi-country fellowships, and Kress Foundation fellowships in Art History. The CAARI Director provides guidance to fellows on matters related to their research and on facilities available at CAARI and in Cyprus, and facilitates contacts with relevant local authorities and scholars. In addition to their research work, fellows are asked to give a lecture on their work and participate in roundtable discussions, and may be featured speakers at CAARI symposia.

Each year, the AIGC fellowship program provides $1,200,000 in fellowships to over 400 Native American and Alaska Native graduate students.  Graduate fellowships are monetary awards made to American Indian and Alaska Native graduate or professional degree-seeking students, who meet all eligible criteria.  The United States Bureau of Indian Education federally funds the fellowship program.  The fellowship amount is typically between $1,000 and $5,000 per academic year (not including summer), and varies from year to year, depending on the availability of funds and unmet financial need.

Eligibility:

  • Pursuing a post baccalaureate graduate or professional degree as a full time student at an accredited institution in the U.S.
  • Able to demonstrate financial need.
  • An enrolled member of a federally recognized American Indian or Alaska Native group, or provide documentation of descendency (possess one-fourth degree federally recognized Indian blood).

American Association of University Women’s Career Development Grant

Career Development Grants support women who hold a bachelor’s degree and are preparing to advance their careers, change careers, or re-enter the work force. Special consideration is given to women of color, and women pursuing their first advanced degree or credentials in nontraditional fields.

Grants provide support for course work beyond a bachelor’s degree, including a master’s degree, second bachelor’s degree, or specialized training in technical or professional fields. Funds are available for distance learning. Course work must be taken at an accredited two- or four-year college or university in the United States, or at a technical school that is fully licensed or accredited by the U.S. Department of Education. Funds are not available for PhD-level work.

American Institute of Indian Studies (Country of India)-Graduate Fellowships

Founded to assist scholars in their study of all aspects of Indian history, culture and contemporary life, the Institute brings about 35 scholars to India every year. These are both American citizens as well as non-American citizens resident in the United States. Of the latter group, many are Indian graduate students studying for Ph.D. degrees at American universities. Many of them return to India, where they assume faculty positions at Indian institutions. In turn, many Indian scholars are invited by member institutions of the American Institute of Indian Studies to lecture or participate in conferences. The Institute then facilitates their travel arrangements and can use its network of scholars across the United States to organize programs of lectures. Fellowships are granted by the American Institute of Indian Studies in the following categories:

Junior Research Fellowships.  Available to doctoral candidates at U.S. universities in all fields of study.  These specifically designed to enable doctoral candidates to pursue their dissertation research in India.  Junior Research Fellows establish formal affiliation with Indian universities and Indian research supervisors.  Awards are available for up to eleven months.

Senior Research Fellowships.  Available to scholars who hold the Ph.D. or its equivalent. Non-U.S. citizens are welcome to apply if they are teaching full-time at U.S. colleges and universities.  These are designed to enable scholars in all disciplines who specialize in South Asia to pursue further research in India.  Senior Fellows establish formal affiliation with an Indian institution.  Short-term awards are available for up to four months.  Long-term awards are available for six to nine months. A limited number of humanists will be granted fellowships paid in dollars funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Senior Scholarly/Professional Development Fellowships.   Available to established scholars who have not previously specialized in Indian studies and to established professionals who have not previously worked or studied in India.  Senior Scholarly/Professional Development Fellows are formally affiliated with an Indian institution.  Awards may be granted for periods of six to nine months.

Senior Performing and Creative Arts Fellowships.  Available to accomplished practitioners of the performing arts of India and creative artists who demonstrate that study in India would enhance their skills, develop their capabilities to teach or perform in the U.S., enhance American involvement with India’s artistic traditions, and strengthen their links with peers in India. Awards will normally be for periods of up to four months, although proposals for periods of up to nine months can be considered.

American Friends of the Mauritshuis Fellowship

The American Friends of the Mauritshuis offers grants in the field of art history to support an academic project devoted to the study of Dutch and Flemish art from the sixteenth through the eighteenth centuries. Topics relevant to the history and collection of the Mauritshuis and travel to The Netherlands are preferred. Preference goes to subjects devoted to paintings and drawings, then sculpture, prints and applied arts. Worldwide applicants must hold an M.A. in art history and must be working toward a Ph.D. Grants range from $5,000 to $15,000, depending on the financial requirements and merits of the project.

The Louise Wallace Hackney Fellowship for the Study of Chinese Art

The American Oriental Society awards the annual Louise Wallace Hackney Fellowship for the Study of Chinese Art. This fellowship covers a period of 12 months, extending from July 1st of the year of the award until June 30th of the following year, and the stipends are dispensed in monthly payments during this period. In exceptional circumstances payments may be combined to cover the initial costs of travel or research materials. These special arrangements can be agreed upon in consultation with the Office of the Secretary-Treasurer of the Society.

This award in the amount of $8,000.00 is open to post-doctoral as well as doctoral students. It is conceived to permit the study of Chinese art, with special relation to painting and its reflection of Chinese culture, and to permit the translation into English of works upon the said subject for the purpose of furthering a better understanding of Chinese painting in the United States. The Fellowship shall permit travel by those to whom an award is given, if such travel is possible. This award is open only to individuals who are citizens of the United States, and while it is possible to apply for a renewal of this grant it may not be done in consecutive years. In no case shall a fellowship be awarded to scholars of well recognized standing, but shall be given to either men or women who show aptitude for promise in the said field of learning. The aim of the Hackney Fellowship is to remind scholars that Chinese art, like all art, is not a disembodied creation, but the outgrowth of the life and culture from which it has sprung, and it is requested that scholars give special attention to this approach in their study.

Applicants for the fellowship should have completed three years study of the Chinese language or its equivalent and should be able to demonstrate that they have already committed themselves to the serious study of this important area of oriental art. All applicants should submit the following materials in duplicate: (1) a transcript of their undergraduate and graduate course work; (2) a statement of personal finances; (3) a three or four page summary of the proposed project to be undertaken during the year of the fellowship award, appended with a financial statement explaining the expense involved in this study; (4) no less than three letters of recommendation. Any scholarly papers or published materials in the area of Chinese painting are welcome along with the other application materials.

The closing date for the application is March 1st; awards will be announced near the end of April. Winning candidates are selected by two committees of specialists in the field.

Created in 1980, it is one of the largest charitable organizations administered by African American women and is a resource which helps young women and men make a difference in their lives and the lives of others.
