Muktabodha Indological Research Institute Fellowships

The Muktabodha Indological Research Institute has been actively encouraging the development of the next generation of scholars of the Hindu Tantra in India and the West through fellowship grants and scholarships.

Deadline: Contact the institute for deadlines and more information.

History
Muktabodha’s scholarship program began in 1998 by sponsoring three US graduate students to study in India under the guidance of internationally recognized scholar Dr. B. N. Pandit, a traditional expert on the philosophy of Kashmir Shaivism. This well known senior traditional scholar steeped in Indian methods of study and interpretation worked rigorously on a daily basis with these dedicated Western students. They were deeply impacted by his engagement with Sanskrit as a living language, and his penetrating insight into the text they studied with him, Utpaladeva’s Isvarpratyabhijna Karika. A book was published based on their recorded lessons with Dr. Pandit, and the students subsequently completed their dissertations and are now sharing their knowledge through their own teaching and writing.

Recognizing that such students play a key role in defining the next generation of scholarship, Muktabodha began offering three levels of scholarships.

Dissertation Research Fellowships in Hindu Tantra
This annual grant enabled outstanding Ph.D. candidates to undertake field research in India in preparation for writing their dissertations specifically on the Hindu Tantra. International in scope, these grants have been awarded to students from Russia, Austria, England and the United States. These younger scholars have studied with various traditional Indian pandits, as well as conducting their own research.

*Please note that Muktabodha is not currently offering Dissertation Fellowship Grants.

Graduate Scholarship Program in India
This program began in 2003 to support Masters’ level students of Kashmir Shaivism and Sanskrit in India.

International Masters’ Scholarship in Hindu Tantra
This scholarship has been awarded from time to time to help exceptional students complete their Masters degree with leading scholars in the field.

Henry Luce III Fellows in Theology

Henry Luce III Fellows in Theology

Deadline: December 2

NB: This fellowship is available to full-time faculty at ATS-accredited or candidate schools.

The Henry Luce III Fellows in Theology program is designed to encourage high-quality research that promises both to contribute to theological inquiry and to provide leadership in theological scholarship. Since its inception in 1994, the program has funded intellectually rigorous research projects that emphasize the interdisciplinary character of theological scholarship and education, and address the needs of the academy, communities of faith, and the wider society. The fellowship enables each Fellow to conduct year-long research in one of several areas of theological inquiry. In addition, Fellows present their findings at a yearly conference, and in both scholarly and popular journals.

  • Bible and the Church: to probe the theological dimensions of Scripture in its historical contexts and how these dimensions relate to and inform current religious and societal issues.
  • Christianity and Contemporary Culture: to explore the moral and ethical dimensions and challenges of Christianity in contemporary North American culture(s).
  • Constructive Theology: to examine theological perspectives that address critical issues relevant to congregational and public life.
  • History of Christianity and the Church Today: to investigate the history of Christian practices and thought and the implications they have for contemporary Christian communities.
  • Ministry and Practice of Communities of Faith: to assess the impact that past or present practices of ministry and leadership (e.g., congregational life, worship, homiletics, counseling) have on church life today.

Other: invites proposals that, while not precisely addressing any of the above categories, meet the general goals of the Luce Fellows program. A proposal in this category should attend to the following three goals: (1) offer a significant and innovative contribution to theological studies, meeting high scholarly standards, (2) enhance the theological understanding of people of faith and enrich the experience of church life in North America, and (3) develop ways for scholarship to inform contemporary culture. Particular attention in this category will be given to proposals that (a) engage Christianity’s dialogue with world religions, reflecting on Christian identity and mission in the world today or (b) explore the role of the imagination in the life of the church, in the expression (past or present) of religious belief and experience in worship, education, and/or the arts (e.g., poetry, painting, photography, dance, sculpture, music, literature, etc.).

Interdisciplinary research and research appropriate to the multiple audiences and diverse discourses of theological scholarship are particularly encouraged. Applicants to The Henry Luce III Fellows in Theology program must be full-time faculty at ATS accredited or candidate schools.
