SIEPM Fellowship in Medieval Philosophy

In co-operation, the Société Internationale pour L’Étude de la Philosophie Médiévale (SIEPM) and the Medieval Institute announce a yearly competition for a stipend to conduct research at the Medieval Institute for a period of no less than one month and up to four months during either the Fall term (late August to December) or the Spring term (mid-January to May). The competition is open to young scholars, age 35 or under, who are members of the SIEPM and who have completed their doctorate or are in the final stages of research for their doctoral dissertations. The Société will provide the winning candidate with up to 700 euros; the Medieval Institute will provide $1,750 per month (for living expenses, etc.) during the period of the scholar’s visit to Notre Dame. Applications must include (1) a description of the proposed research (1-2 pages): applicants should indicate the dates they intend to visit Notre Dame, and should show how their research will benefit from use of the resources of the Medieval Institute; (2) a curriculum vitae; and (3) letters of recommendation by two members of the SIEPM.

Fellowship for Intensive Turkish Language—American Research Institute in Turkey

* “Perform at the high-intermediate level on a proficiency-based admissions examination.”
* U.S. citizen, national or permanent resident
* Enrolled in undergraduate or graduate level studies (with “B” average), or be faculty

The American Research Institute in Turkey will offer full travel and fellowships for ten advanced students for participation in the summer program in intensive advanced Turkish language at Bogaziçi University in Istanbul.  This intensive program offers the equivalent of one full academic year of study in Turkish at the college level. The fellowships cover round-trip airfare to Istanbul, application and tuition fees, and a maintenance stipend.  ARIT fellowship supported courses are offered at the advanced level.  Class size is limited to ten students.  Each class meets twenty hours per week.  Classes are held on weekdays from 9 am to 1 pm.   They are conducted in Turkish, with informal and formal styles introduced and reviewed through instruction, language laboratory work, and open conversations with teaching assistants.  In the afternoon, students meet with teaching assistants on an informal basis for additional instruction and free conversation.  Participants also attend extracurricular activities including films, lectures, and cultural events both on- and off-campus.

  • Not available for scholars who live within commuting distance of New York

Fellowship award is $3,000. The fellowships support work in one of five archives: the Gilder Lehrman Collection, on deposit at the New York Historical Society; the Columbia University Rare Book and Manuscript Library; the New York Public Libray—Humanities and Social Sciences Library; and the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture (NYPL). Fellowships range in duration from a week to two months.

Each of the fellowships includes a stipend of $1,500 for four weeks of research, which must be conducted in the Society’s archives sometime between July 1 and June 30. The Massachusetts Historical Society offers approximately 20 fellowships each year for researchers who need to use the collections to complete a major project.  Candidates who live 50 or more miles from Boston receive preference.

The American Antiquarian Society offers short-term visiting academic research fellowships tenable for one to three months each year. The Society’s preeminent collections offer broad research opportunities in American history and culture through the year 1876. Special short-term grants support scholars working in the history of the book in American culture, in the American eighteenth century, and in American literary studies, as well as in studies that draw upon the Society’s preeminent collections of graphic arts, newspapers, and magazines.

This is an annual award in the amount of $250 for the author of the best essay published during the previous calendar year on any aspect of the role of women in the history of Christianity. Authors of eligible articles and any member of the Society may nominate titles for consideration.

Authors must have their work nominated in order to be eligible for any of the prizes listed above. To make a nomination, please send a letter or an e-mail to the Executive Secretary (keith.francis@churchhistory.org).  The nomination should include the following: 1) the author’s name; 2) the author’s affiliation (or designation of ‘independent scholar,’ if appropriate); 3) the author’s contact information (mailing address and e-mail address); 4) the title of the author’s work; and for books 5) the publisher and year of publication.
