Member of the United Church of Christ * From an underrepresented ethnic group (such as African American, Hispanic American, Asian American, Native American Indian, or Pacific Islander) * M.Div., students enrolled in an accredited school of theology, and who has maintained at least a B average in all post high school academic studies.

Or, Ph.D., Th.D., or Ed.D. students within a field related to religious studies Grants are made to both full-time and part-time students and range from $500 to $5,000 annually. Grants may be renewed. The Adrienne M. and Charles Shelby Rooks Fellowship for Racial and Ethnic Theological Students was established to support the seminary education of members of the United Church of Christ from racial and ethnic groups underrepresented in our church who are committed to serving the United Church of Christ and who are enrolled in a school of theology accredited by the Association of Theological Schools in the United States and Canada. Grants are also made to support doctoral study at accredited graduate schools for those seeking to pursue a scholarly teaching vocation in the field of religion.

* Members of the congregation of Trinity Lutheran Church, Springfield, Ohio, receive special consideration during the selection process.

The Roy and Kathryn Hickes Scholarship Fund of the Springfield Foundation was established to provide Lutherans with funds for religious education opportunities, including formal seminary education scholarships and opportunities for laypersons of all ages who want to learn more about matters that relate to their Christian faith and life.  The purpose of the fund is to assist students in their desire to study the Word of God in order to better prepare themselves for Christian Service.  All recipients in a Lay Program must register to attend a specific educational or fellowship program; submit a completed Hickes Scholarship Application by the award deadline date; supply the selection committee with a brief narrative describing how they have grown from their experience after they have concluded the program.  Formal M.Div, MA or Doctoral Education Program participants must submit a completed Hickes Scholarship Application by the award deadline date; be accepted into an accredited institution of higher learning; enroll and complete at least 3 credit hours each quarter or semester in the accredited institution of acceptance, and maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.75 during the period of enrollment.

FLAS Scholarships – Foreign Language and Area Studies

This program provides academic year and summer fellowships to institutions of higher education to assist graduate students in foreign language and either area or international studies. The goals of the fellowship program include: (1) to assist in the development of knowledge, resources, and trained personnel for modern foreign language and area/international studies; (2) to stimulate the attainment of foreign language acquisition and fluency; and (3) to develop a pool of international experts to meet national needs.

Eligible Participants: A student is eligible to receive a fellowship if he or she:

  • Is a graduate student.
  • Is a citizen, national or permanent resident of the United States.
  • Is enrolled in a program of modern foreign language training in a language for which the institution has developed or is developing performance-based instruction.
  • Shows potential for high academic achievement based on such indices as grade point average, class ranking, or similar measures that the institution may determine.

Before awarding a fellowship for use outside the United States, an institution must obtain approval from the U.S. Department of Education. A fellowship may be approved for use outside the United States if:

  • The student is enrolled in an advanced overseas modern foreign language program approved by the institution at which the student is enrolled in the United States; or
  • The student is engaged in research that cannot be effectively done in the United States and is affiliated with an institution of higher education or other appropriate organization in the host country.

Duration: An institution may award a fellowship to a student for one academic year or one summer session if the summer session is the equivalent of one academic year of modern foreign language study.

Young Center Fellowship Program

Young Center Fellowship Program

Center Fellows typically spend one semester at the Young Center pursuing research related to the faith, history, and culture of Anabaptist and/or Pietist movements. The Center provides office space, various support services, access to library holdings, and a modest stipend toward housing and travel expenses. Fellows typically teach a seminar, present a public lecture, or organize an interpretive event during the period of residency. Fellows are responsible for their own salary support from sabbatical, research grant, or other sources. Excellent resources on a variety of Anabaptist and Pietist groups are located within the region. Summer fellowships for junior faculty and graduate students are also available for a short-term appointment of four to six weeks.

The Center also welcomes Doctoral Fellows who are conducting research or involved in writing their doctoral dissertations. Although Doctoral Fellows receive support for their research through the use of facilities, computer, and library resources, they do not receive a stipend. Doctoral Fellows should follow the same application procedures as Center Fellows.

National Huguenot Society Scholarship

A generous bequest from a member of The National Huguenot Society has made it possible for the Society to award a $5000 scholarship to a qualified college or postgraduate student each year.

This one-time award is limited to $5000 per student, and is not renewable. The scholarship is not based upon financial need, and the award monies will be issued directly to the educational institution.

A candidate must meet all of the following criteria in order to be considered for this award:

  • Be a regular member of The National Huguenot Society, having met all requirements for that membership.
  • Be a student at an accredited college or graduate school who has had at least two semesters of history which include, at least in part, a history of religion.
  • Have completed at least two years of college with a 3.0 grade point average on a 4.0 scale.

Theological students who are preparing for church occupations may be eligible for loans for the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.).  Applicants must be:

  • U.S. Citizenship or Permanent Resident status.
  • Member of a Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.)
    • Enrolled as an Inquirer or Candidate for Ordination by a PC (U.S.A.) Presbytery
  • Pursuing a first professional degree in preparation for a church occupation (MDiv and/or MACE)
  • Demonstrate educational cost to justify the loan based on federal methodology – Must complete FAFSA
  • Be making satisfactory progress toward a degree
  • Demonstrate financial reliability
    • Have less than $38,000 of education debt

Inquirers may borrow up to $3,000 through the first two years of seminary.  To continue borrowing the student must be a candidate by the third or final year.  Candidates may borrow $3,000 in the first year, and $6,000 in the second and third year.  Total loan may not exceed $15,000, including any loans from PCUSA’s other student loan programs.

PCUSA members who are not Inquirer’s or Candidates may be eligible for loans from the Undergraduate/Graduate loan program.  Borrowers in the Undergraduate/Graduate loan program are required to have a co-signer.  Loan caps for graduate studies in the Undergraduate/Graduate loan program are customized for each student by PCUSA.  Loan amounts may not exceed $5,000 per academic year.

The Louis Pelzer Memorial Award Committee of the Organization of American Historians invites candidates for graduate degrees to submit essays for the Louis Pelzer Memorial Award competition. Essays may deal with any period or topic in the history of the United States. The winning essay will be published in the Journal of American History.

Essays, including footnotes, should not exceed 10,000 words. The winning essay will be published in the Journal of American History.

Significance of the subject matter, literary craftsmanship, and competence in the handling of evidence are some of the factors that will be considered in judging the essays.

The General Commission on Archives and History of The United Methodist Church offers an annual award of $200 (first prize) and $100 (second prize) to the students enrolled in the M. Div. program (or its equivalent) in United Methodist or other seminaries accredited by the Association of Theological Schools who submit the best papers on some aspect of United Methodist history broadly conceived.

The award is given in memory of John Harrison Ness (1891-1980), pastor, conference superintendent, and denominational executive in the Evangelical United Brethren Church .

  • The paper must have been judged by its author’s professor as one of quality. Once the paper has passed his or her critical judgment, the professor will submit it to the General Commission on Archives and History.
  • The paper must be properly footnoted and bear evidence of thorough and reliable handling of sources using the annotation standards accepted at the seminary. A bibliography also must be included.
  • The paper should normally range in length from 5,000 to 10,000 words.
  • Three copies of the paper are to be submitted for judging. The winning paper(s) may be published in Methodist History, at the discretion of the editor.
  • Judges for the General Commission will be appointed under the direction of the History Committee of the Commission. They will be professional historians, acquainted with United Methodist history.
