Financial support for doctoral students of Latino/a, Asian, Pacific Islands or First Nations descent who have completed the course work stage of their Ph.D. or Th.D. program in religion, theological studies or biblical studies.

ELIGIBILITY

  • Applicants must be of Latino/a, Asian-Pacific Islander or First Nations descent enrolled or admitted full time in a Th.D. or Ph.D. program in religious, theological, or biblical studies.
  • Applicants must be finished with coursework by the beginning of the fellowship year (September 1, 2017).
  • Applicants at the dissertation stage must be in a position to write full-time during the fellowship year.
  • All pre-dissertation applicants must be past the coursework stage but have not yet reached candidacy [ABD].
  • To be classified at the dissertation stage [ABD], applicant’s dissertation committee must have approved the dissertation research proposal and writing plan and given the student full approval to proceed before submission of an application.
  • Students enrolled in or applying to Doctor of Ministry (D.Min.) programs are ineligible for this opportunity.
  • Applicants must be studying at an accredited academic institution in the U.S. or Canada.

This is a graduate program offered by the Jewish Community Centers, where you agree to work for them after graduation for two years to be eligible for this award.

APPLICANTS MUST:
1. Pursue a master’s degree in a field that pertains to JCC employment
2. Be committed to beginning their career in the JCC Movement
3. Be willing to relocate for employment after graduation if not already employed at a JCC
4. Display achievement in academics and community leadership
5. Be knowledgeable about the JCC Movement’s values and mission

FUNDING
Funding of JCC Association Graduate Education Scholarships is obtained through the generosity of Jewish communal leaders, individual sponsors, JCC Association board members, foundations and other interested donors.

American Academy of Religion Journalism Award

American Academy of Religion Journalism Award

Deadline: February 28

Annually the AAR honors the best in-depth reporting on religion. The contest is open to all print and Web-based journalists at media outlets of any size. The first-place winner receives $1,000; second-place, $500; and third-place, $250. The deadline for submission is February 28. Contest winners are usually announced in June.

Eligibility:

  • News articles, columns, editorials, and other opinion writing in print media of any size or in Web-based media.
  • Three to five articles published during the previous calendar year, January 1 through December 31. Not less than three articles and not more than five may be submitted per entry.
  • Any topic related to religion.
  • Writing should include a historical, explanatory, or contextual approach to the subject matter, using research or perspectives of scholars.
  • Writing for general audiences preferred.
  • Writing on a diversity of topics (across traditions or within a single tradition) preferred.
  • You should be the sole author, except that one of the articles may have multiple bylines or credits, provided that you identify the article and state that you did most of the writing.
  • Non-English language articles, including those published outside North America, acceptable if translated into English. Copies of original articles must be included with submission.
  • Sidebars acceptable as part of an article or may be entered as a separate article.
  • Articles from a series acceptable, though other eligibility items should be considered: not less than three and not more than five articles per entry, and writing on a diversity of topics preferred.

Entry fee: (USD) $25 per entry.

Judges: Current and former journalists, plus a representative from the AAR’s Committee on the Public Understanding of Religion, which oversees the contest.

HRH Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal ISNA Fellowship Program

The HRH Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal ISNA Fellowship Program offers the opportunity to receive education and training in non-profit management and philanthropy and prepares Muslims graduate students to become effective and knowledgeable leaders of non-profit organizations in North America.

Fellows will be given the opportunity to study non-profit management, fundraising, capacity development, and other relevant fields. These courses will be taken at the Indiana University Center on Philanthropy or other similar accredited institutions of higher education and centers of philanthropic studies.

PROGRAM ELIGIBILITY
Fellows will be required to participate in a 5 day orientation and training in May.
In addition to a full-time academic schedule, fellows must be able to complete a 480 hour internship with ISNA.
Fellows must be enrolled in a qualifying Master’s degree program by Fall semester, (preference will be given to applicants enrolled at Indiana University programs in non-profit studies or philanthropy).
Applicants will submit 2 letters of recommendation along with their application and essay. Resume and financial need document submission is optional.

Rachel Tanur Memorial Prize

Deadline: January 25The Social Science Research Council announces a twenty-year program of biannual grants from the Mark Family Fund for the Rachel Tanur Memorial Prize for Visual Sociology.

The prize recognizes students in the social sciences who incorporate visual analysis in their work.  It is named for Rachel Dorothy Tanur (1958–2002), an urban planner and lawyer who cared deeply about people and their lives and was an acute observer of living conditions and human relationships.

Critieria:

The applicant must submit two commentaries in English, each no more than 4000 characters (~500 words) in length, and one photo. One commentary must be based on one or more of the photos by Rachel Tanur and one must be based on an original photo taken by the applicant. Each commentary is expected to give a sociological analysis of the selected visual material, based on theoretical and applied social science methods.

In addition, each applicant must submit a letter from his or her advisor, certifying the current student status of the applicant, to tanurprize@ssrc.org.

Wabash Center Large Project Grants

NB: Faculty are eligible to apply for these grants.

The Wabash Center provides funds for activities that enhance teaching and learning in the fields of religion and theology. It seeks to fund projects that promote a sustained conversation about pedagogy through the improvement of practical applications of teaching and learning methods, the encouragement of research and study of pedagogical issues, and the creation of a supportive environment for teaching.

The grant program is concerned primarily with building the capacity of institutions and faculties for sustained pedagogical conversations. It also serves to empower and encourage others to initiate relevant change within their home institutions. In addition, all applications are expected to reference specific classroom practices and challenges.

Grant Levels
 Small Project Grants for amounts up to $5,000 (previously the maximum was $2,500) have a short application process and can be approved anytime throughout the year. Rolling Deadline

 Project Grants for amounts up to $30,000 require a full application process and are awarded at two different times during the year. Deadlines: March 1 and October 3

Activities Funded
Projects might involve meetings of scholars across schools, regions, denominations, or subject areas to think about syllabi, teaching strategies, student learning styles, or teaching as a vocation. We encourage interested applicants to propose creative projects that will enhance their particular teaching and learning contexts.

Christine Downing Dissertation Fellowship

Christine Downing Dissertation Fellowship

This annual Fellowship carries the name of Professor Downing in acknowledgement of her contribution to the fields of depth psychology and mythology, her many years of teaching at Pacifica Graduate Institute, and of her gift to OPUS of her own archival materials. The purpose of the Downing Fellowship will be to award an annual scholarship to dissertation students of any accredited graduate level institution in the fields of depth psychology and mythology. Once awarded, the winning student must use the collections at OPUS for a significant amount of her or his dissertation research.

The archival collections available for research at OPUS include Joseph Campbell, Marija Gimbutas, James Hillman, Jane and Joseph Wheelwright, Christine Downing, Marion Woodman, Adolf Guggenbühl-Craig, and Katie Sanford. Visit the individual collection pages for more information on these scholars.

The Elizabeth Ann Bogert Memorial Fund for the Study and Practice of Christian Mysticism, administered by Friends World Committee for Consultation, Section of the Americas, makes annual grants of up to $1,000.

Proposals should be no more than two pages and include the following

  • a full description of the project, including an indication of how the project relates to the study and/or practice of Christian mysticism
  • the specific amount of money requested

Soroptomist International’s Founder Region Fellowship

Founder Region Fellowship offers grants to women enrolled in graduate schools within the boundary of Founder Region who have advanced to candidacy and are entering into the last year of their doctoral programs. These grants-in-aid are proffered to assist women in the completion of their doctoral degrees.

The Fellowships are announced and formally presented at the annual Founder Region Spring Conference.

The grant requirements are:

Competition is open to any outstanding graduate woman who is working toward a doctoral degree, preferably in the last year of study but permissibly during the last two years provided she has advanced to candidacy. She must be enrolled in a graduate school within Founder Region; including the Northern California counties of Alameda, Contra Costa, Del Norte, Humboldt, Lake, Marin, Mendocino, Napa, Solano, Sonoma, the State of Hawaii, and the U. S. territories of Guam and The Marianas.

Candidates must submit to the Fellowship President. a completed application with all supporting materials (as described in the application). Applications must be postmarked no later than January 15. The forms are available on this website and/or may be obtained through the dean of the applicant’s graduate school or by emailing the Fellowship President.

Holy Trinity Centennial Scholarship Trust

The sole function of the Trust is to provide scholarship aid to persons actively involved in or committed to future participation in the ministry of the Episcopal Church or the Anglican Communion.  For example, the Trust might help an applicant initiate, develop, or complete a program of study through an educational institution, seminar, or certification program.  Funds granted could be used for registration, books, tuition, or fees.  Grants generally vary between $1000 and $5000.

In order to be considered for a scholarship, a complete application should be submitted which is to include:

  • A detailed description of the ministry that the applicant intends to pursue
  • A detailed explanation of how any scholarship funds that may be granted will be used
  • An indication of previous academic curriculum and performance including a sealed, official copy of the applicant’s college transcript (undergraduate).  Graduate school transcripts may be submitted also.
  • A current resume/ curriculum vitae
  • A copy of the applicant’s most recent IRS Form 1040 (please do not include any schedules or attachments).  If income for the current year is expected to be significantly different from that on the IRS form, indicate this figure as well.
  • Three letters of support or recommendation mailed independently by the references.  One of the references must be by an ordained member of the Episcopal/Anglican clergy.  Family members may not serve as references.

For applicants outside North America:

  • Include all the information above except the IRS Form 1040.

In addition please include:

  • Detailed information on the applicant’s sources of income.
  • A letter from the applicant’s Bishop, indicating approval or endorsement
  • Submission of the application electronically rather than regular mail

All application materials, including letters of support, must be received by March 31.
