Amelia Kemp Scholarship

Purpose

The purpose of the Opportunity Scholarships for Lutheran Laywomen is to provide assistance to women studying for a career other than ordained ministry. The specific purpose of the Amelia Kemp Fund is to assist ELCA women of color in undergraduate, graduate, professional, or vocational courses of study.

History

  • Funds awarded from the Amelia Kemp fund come from the interest on endowment funds given by LCA (Lutheran Church in America) women to the organization; some date back to UELC (United Evangelical Lutheran Church) women.
  • The average award is $600 – $1,000.

ELIGIBILITY AND GUIDELINES

The applicant must:

  • be a citizen of the United States of America.
  • hold membership in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.
  • be at least 21 years old.
  • have experienced an interruption in education of two or more years since completion of high school.

Irene Drinkall Franke Scholarship

Deadline: February 15

The Evangelical Lutheran Church of America selects laywomen annually to receive the $1,000 Irene Drinkall Franke Scholarship to financially support their religious studies and professional preparation for Christian service occupations. To apply, female students must hold ELCA membership, be U.S. citizens, attend accredited universities, be at least 21 years old, have experienced a two-year or longer interruption in education, and submit a pastor reference form.

Guide One Scholarship

Deadline: April 14

Providing support for a strong ministry education.

As one of America’s leading insurers of churches, the GuideOne Foundation is offering four $2,500 scholarships to students who are actively pursuing a future career in ministry and meet the below criteria.

Eligibility

  • Junior and senior religious studies students, graduate religious studies students and any individuals in seminary are eligible. Please note that you must plan to be enrolled in your program of study for the following fall semester to be eligible.
  • Students must be attending accredited colleges, universities or seminaries within the United States and District of Columbia.
  • Minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.25 is required.
  • Transcript and one letter of recommendation are required. Unofficial transcripts will be accepted.
  • Applicant is required to submit an essay that explains why they chose to pursue their degree and how they plan to use their education and future career in ministry. Essay should be double spaced and not exceed 350 words.
  • GuideOne employees or children of employees are not eligible.
  • GuideOne agents or children of agents are eligible.

Scholarship Award

  • The scholarship check will be made payable and mailed to recipient’s school or seminary.

Father McGivney Vocations Scholarships

Deadline: June 1

Annually, the Knights of Columbus distributes 40 Father McGivney Vocations Scholarships for $2,500 apiece to male students who are enrolled full-time the first four years of religious studies at an ATS-accredited theology school to prepare for the Roman Catholic priesthood. Preference is given to financially needy students who are members or descents of the KofC. Applications must include academic transcripts, two letters of recommendation, a short essay, and the diocesan vocations director’s signature.

David H.C. Read Preacher/Scholar Award

Deadline: January 31

Named in honor of the late Chaplain to Her Majesty in Scotland, the David H.C. Read Preacher/Scholar Award gifts $20,000 from the Madison Avenue Presbyterian Church each year. To qualify, applicants must be entering their final year of a Master of Divinity program at ATS-accredited theological schools across the United States and committed to entering Protestant parish ministry upon graduation. Three religious studies runners-up will receive $1,000.

The David H.C. Read Preacher/Scholar Award is given solely on the basis of merit–not need–without regard to race, color, sex, age, denomination, national or ethnic origin or handicap.

AGBU Religious Studies Scholarship

Deadline: May 31

AGBU offers scholarships to graduate students of Armenian descent worldwide (excluding citizens of Armenia studying in Armenia) who are pursuing religious studies (theology, youth ministry). Applicants must be enrolled in full-time degree programs at seminaries or highly selective colleges/universities worldwide with a GPA of 3.0 and above as measured by the American grading system scale. Grants of up to $5,000 USD are awarded annually, and are available for a maximum of three (3) years toward seminary/college/university education expenses.

AGBU offers various categories of scholarships depending on location and field of study. Only students of Armenian descent who are enrolled in full-time degree programs for the entire academic year are eligible to apply.

Please note that AGBU Scholarship application deadlines will be strictly enforced. Applications submitted past these designated dates will not be accepted or considered. In order to submit an application, students must complete each section as instructed and upload all required documents. No exceptions will be made.

Applicants from Armenia

Applicants who are citizens of Armenia qualify for AGBU Scholarships for study outside of Armenia.  For the applicant’s security, it is advised that a major portion of tuition and other expenses has already been secured through personal means, foundations, governmental and state grants, and/or the academic institution they are attending.  We impose this rule to ensure that there is a good chance the student will actually be able to study abroad. Please note, scholarships are not available to citizens of Armenia for local study in Armenia.

Buddhist KF Translation Studies Scholarship

Deadline: March 1

The KF Translation Studies Scholarship supports students in advanced degree programs in translation studies and Buddhist philosophy with the express purpose of training Dharma translators for the future. Individuals may also apply for a continuing translation study scholarship.

Who is eligible: Students who are enrolled in a program of translation studies or Buddhist philosophy and are on track to become translators or are currently working as translators. Candidates must already have some translation experience and be enrolled in an advanced degree program (MA, PhD, or MPhil).

Student translators who do not fulfill these criteria are welcome to apply to the Buddhist Studies Scholarship program.

When: Submissions are accepted between February 1 and March 1, and applicants are notified of the outcome by July 1.

Where: Students may apply from any accredited university worldwide.

How much: The scholarships vary in size; the maximum amount is US$5,000.

Point Scholarship

Deadline: January 30

Point Foundation considers many factors when assessing scholarship applicants, including:

  • A proven track record of leadership and community involvement
  • Strong academic achievement
  • Working for the betterment of the LGBTQ community
  • Financial need
Eligible applicants also:

  • Must be enrolled or intending to enroll at an accredited college or university based in the United States, including Hawaii and Alaska. Students enrolled or intending to enroll in a college or university in a United States territory are NOT eligible.
  • Must be “out” as a person who identifies as a member of the LGBTQ community.
  • Must be enrolled full-time for the full academic year.
  • Must be enrolled in a degree-granting undergraduate or graduate/ doctoral program. Post-doctoral research programs are not eligible.
  • Students studying at community colleges, online programs, or trade schools, are NOT eligible.
  • Community college students must be transferring to a four-year college or university.
  • Must be at least a senior in high school.
  • If selected as a finalist, the finalist must be in North or Central America on April 20-22 and be available to fly to Los Angeles in order to remain eligible for the scholarship. All travel expenses will be covered by Point.

Magna Carta Scholarship

Deadline: July 31

To honor the important principles of justice and equal rights espoused in the Magna Carta, the office of J. Antonio Tramontana has created a scholarship to assist a student currently pursuing higher education. The scholarship, in the amount of $1,215 — for the year the Magna Carta was created — is open to university and law students throughout the United States.

The Magna Carta Scholarship will be awarded to one U.S. undergraduate or law student who submits the application materials by the deadline listed below.

Scholarship Requirements

To be eligible for the scholarship, applicants must be full-time students at either an accredited university or law school in the United States and must maintain a GPA of at least 3.0.

To apply, candidates must submit the following materials electronically before July 31:

  1. This complete application form
  2. A certified copy of the student’s current university transcript that confirms the student’s full-time status and grade-point average of at least 3.0.
  3. A submission as described here: Applicants are asked to explain why they believe the principles of the Magna Carta — freedom, justice and equality — remain important today. Submissions can be in the following formats (must be electronic):

College for Christian Leaders

Our Mission Statement: 
The purpose of the Foundation is to assist Christian individuals with identified leadership history, high academic achievement and financial need with academic, vocational and ministry training to further the Kingdom of Jesus Christ.

Guidelines: The following are the minimum guidelines that must be met before a candidate will be considered for scholarship:

  1. Christian testimony, and verifiable Christian leadership.
  2. Entering undergraduate studies, or currently attempting to attain a degree. (Occasionally we assist graduate level students who meet all other criteria).
  3. 3.0 G.P.A. or better.
  4. Financial need. Combined income of parents and student is below $75,000. Foundation students natural and step parent’s incomes are included in that income ceiling.
  5. Primary residence or attending college must be in California, Oregon, or Washington.


The Application Process: This Website contains the following forms which can be downloaded for completion:

(1) Application Cover Sheet (to assist you in making certain you have provided the requested information;)

(2) the Application itself;

(3) Leadership Assessment Form; and

(4) Ministry Reference Form.

All of these forms as well as the information and documents referenced or requested in them must be received in one package by the deadline of May 20 in order for you to be considered.
